Chinese engineers repaired an expressway bridge by swinging an 87-meter-long beam plate into place. The swinging of the beam plate, which weighs more than 10000 tons, was made on a bridge lying overhead the section of the Shanghai-Chengdu expressway in Changzhou. The swing bridge is the largest of its kind on the Shanghai-Chengdu expressway. Although the weight of the beam plate exceeds 10,000 tons, it is a ball joint with only 8 tons that was swung. A swing bridge is a movable bridge that has as its primary structural support a vertical locating pin and support ring, usually at or near to its center of gravity, about which the turning span can then pivot horizontally as shown in the animated illustration to the right.
