The China Grand Canal Museum broke ground Sunday morning in the Sanwan Scenic Area along the Yangzhou section of the Grand Canal.

Wang Yanwen, member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee and Director of the Publicity Department laid the foundation for the China Grand Canal Museum project alongside with Wang Jiang, vice governor of Jiangsu, and Zhang Jinqiu, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chief architect of the China Architecture Northwest Design Institute.
The construction of the China Grand Canal Museum is an important measure for the construction of the National Grand Canal Cultural Belt. It is an important carrier for demonstrating the glorious history of the Chinese nation and reviving the memory of the national culture. The site is located on the east side of the ancient canal in Yangzhou and has a total land area of 200 mu.
The architectural plan was led by Academician Zhang Jinqiu. The museum will be built with a number of themed exhibition halls and functional areas to make it a modern comprehensive museum integrating cultural heritage protection, scientific research exhibitions and leisure experience so as to display the Grand Canal comprehensively.
The first phase of the intangible cultural heritage cultural expo garden will be planned on the east side of the museum. It will be positioned as a cultural and leisure area with the theme of canal as the theme, intangible cultural heritage as the distinctive feature and diverse leisure activities as the experience. It is expected to open to visitors alongside with the China Grand Canal Museum concurrently.
