East China’s Jiangsu province celebrated the provincial reading day and the world book and copyright day on Tuesday with a variety of activities. The 15th Jiangsureading festival and the 24th Nanjing reading festival were also held.

A ceremony was held to mark the event with demonstration cities and families awarded and 12 excellent books promoted to the public.

Wang Yanwen, head of the provincial publicity department and Wang Jiang, vice governor of Jiangsu, attended the ceremony.
The two leaders also inspected the picture exhibition on the promotion of reading-oriented cities across the province. They also presented pictures books and reading packages.

Professor Xiang Jiuyu of Wuhan University, author of one of the 12 excellent books, gave a lecture on book reading in Nanjing.
The college students in Nanjingread classic books and shared the fun of readingthrough drama performances and poetry reading.
Reading sessions were also held in various parts of the province to call for the society’s enthusiasm in book reading.
The 24th edition of World Book and Copyright Day, which falls on April 23, 2019, is themed on celebrating literature and reading while focusing particularly on the importance of enhancing and protecting Indigenous languages. As a vector of knowledge, books bring people together around a story and a common heritage while revealing their specificities through different cultures, identities and languages. The focus on this topic is fully in line with the celebration of the International Year of the Indigenous Languages.
