East China’s Jiangsu province will host its first Grand Canal Cultural Tourism Expo from May 3 to 6. The event will be sponsored by the provincial department of publicity, the provincial department of culture and tourism and Yangzhou municipal government.
The first Grand Canal Cultural Tourism Expo will be themed on "integration, innovation and sharing" with a view to building three platforms for the integration of cultural travel between cities and towns along the Grand Canal, the promotion of cultural travel and the sharing of good life so as to further build an important integrated cultural and travel platform with growing influence at home and abroad.
The Grand Canal is not only a valuable historical heritage, but also a vivid name card of the Chinese culture. General Secretary Xi Jinping has made important instructions on the promotion of the inheritance and utilization of the Grand Canal culture, the General Offices of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council has issued the Outline of the Planning and Inheritance and Utilization of the Grand Canal Culture Protection.
The Grand Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the longest as well as the oldest canal or artificial river in the world. Starting at Beijing, it passes through Tianjin and the provinces of Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang to the city of Hangzhou, linking the Yellow River and Yangtze River.
