East China’s Jiangsu province has made headway in transportation development since the beginning of this year in accordance with the requirements of the provincial party committee and the provincial government.
Jiangsu invested 25.4 billion yuan on transportation projects in the first quarter of this year, up 12.8% year on year and accounting for 17.8% of the annual plan.
The investment has targeted railway construction in particular with 7.87 billion yuan injected in the first quarter, up 54.4% year on year.
37 transportation projects will be launched this year with 27 breaking ground in the first quarter, accounting for 73% of the total.
77.3% and 96.5% of the tracks had been laid by the end of March on the railway connecting Xuzhou, Suqian, Huai’an and Yancheng and the railway linking up Lianyungang, Huai’an, Yangzhou and Zhenjiang.
Smooth progress was made in the construction of the Nanjing-Huai’an railway and the north Yangtze River high-speed railway. Construction on the transportation projects that broke ground early this year was making headway.
In the meantime, the province’s transportation structures were further adjusted in the first quarter.
In the first quarter, the province's volumes of railway freight, highway and rail container transport and railway waterway container transport reached 14.44 million tons, 73,400 TEUs and 105,700 TEUs, an increase of 15.1% year on year. The province’s waterway freight transport hit 170 million tons, up 5.9% year on year.
The focus was laid on the adjustment of the transportation structures for bulk cargo and container cargo transport over highway and railway and highway and waterway.
At the beginning of this year, Taicang Port Group officially opened the container line between Shitang Bay of Wuxi and Taicang. The railway containers, upon arrival in Wuxi, were transported to Taicang through the inland river to connect the waterway and the railway.
The acceleration of multi-mode transport, the cancellation of toll gates at provincial borders and the efforts to tackle pollution caused by transportation has combined to give rise to a smooth, efficient, safe and green modern integrated transportation system and give a strong impetus to the province’s economic and social development.
