More than half of young graduates, born in 1990s, have chosen to pursue further studies, according to employment reports by universities in Jiangsu Province.
A number of universities have published reports on new graduates, such as Nanjing University, Southeast University, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and Nanjing University of Science and Technology.
The average annual salary of graduates of Nanjing University reached 144,100 yuan ($21,399) in last year. To be specific, graduates of Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, and PhD degree earned 139,100 yuan, 143,900 yuan and 162,300 yuan a year respectively.
For graduates of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Bachelor’s degree holders earned 6,115 yuan a month at the beginning, and 8,140 yuan for Master’s degree holders. Graduates from the university’s School of Computer Science and Technology earned the highest, at 12,073 yuan a month.
The proportion of Bachelor’s degree graduates seeking further study at Southeast University and several schools in Nanjing University reached 52.99 percent and over 50 percent respectively. Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics had 47.27 percent of students go to study abroad after finishing their domestic undergraduate study.
Despite the high employment rate, the proportion of students who started business after graduation has always remained low.
Only 0.1 percent of Bachelor’s degree graduates from Southeast University became self-employed, and 0.29 percent at Nanjing University. The number of self-employed PhD graduates in Jiangsu universities was almost zero.
