A total of 2,500 people run on the renovated Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge on December 16 to mark the bridge’s 50th anniversary and welcome it’s planned reopening to the public.

The runners included both those born in 1968, when the bridge opened, and construction workers. As a tribute to the year of 1968, the 6.8-kilometer race started from the southern ramp, passed by the two towers in south and north, and then returned to the southern tower.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the bridge, China's first self-designed road and rail truss bridge constructed by the nation. As one of the country's places of interest, it has become the symbol of a collective memory for many Chinese.

After in use for 48 years, the bridge was closed for renovation on October 28, 2016. It will reopen by the end of the year after 27 months of maintenance.
