During the ceremony, Zhang Sujiu, a well-known overseas Southern Californian leader and the daughter of Zhang Zhizhong, the late patriotic commander of the Kuomintang during the war of resistance against Japan, read out a four-word ritual. She expressed deepest sorrow for both the Chinese and Americans who diedduring the Nanjing Massacre and the Pearl Harbor Attack.

Ms. Zhang said they have held annual events to commemorate the Nanjing Massacre and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor since 2014, in an attempt to renew the friendship between China and the United States.
