In the past 4 decades of reform and opening up, with the aging of the population, the elderly care service has developed steadily, and the ways of elderly care service have changed significantly. In today’s program, we will show you the development of nursing homes in Taixing, a county level cit in north Jiangsu.

Dasheng Nursing Home in Jichuan town is a row of low-rise houses facing the three-storey buildings across the road, witnessing the changes of the nursing home. Zhu Danan is the administrator of the nursing home. He has worked here since the establishment of the 1980s. At that time, the nursing home was made up of low-rise bungalows with some elderly and childless elders living there.

With the economic and social development, Dasheng Nursing Home has stepped into the fast lane of rapid improvement and transformation. In the early 1990s, Dasheng Nursing Home began to build a three-story building to improve the living environment of the elderly. The old people's home also started to receive more than 70 disabled elders rather than accommodating childless elders only, making inroads into a full range of elderly care services.

In 1996, the State promulgated the Law on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of the Elderly, which quickly promoted the development of private nursing homes. Ye Xuefen’s Daqing Nursing Home was the first private nursing home in the province. At that time, many people shunned from spending their late years in nursing homes, Ye’s nursing home received no more than five elderly people in one year. In the face of difficulties, the government offered timely help.

Today, Ye Xuefen's nursing home has become the largest and best-equipped private nursing home in the central Jiangsu region. With the development of the times, people are setting higher requirements for healthcare, and the integration of medical care has become a new demand for old-age care. By relying on local medical resources, the nursing home has integrated health checkups, disease prevention, rehabilitation care, and hospice care so as to provide health guarantee for the elders.

In addition to the old-age care institutions, in recent years, the "day care center" funded by the government and operated by private institutions has greatly promoted the development of home-based care, home help, food distribution, and leisure entertainment and rehabilitation. Old people can enjoy the services of nursing homes at the doorstep.

By the end of 2017, Taixing had registered 59 urban community-based home care service centers and 265 rural community-based home care service centers or stations, with urban and rural community coverage rates of 100% and 89% respectively.
