Thursday marks the National Dental Care Day in China. Experts say people should check their teeth regularly so as to treat oral diseases as soon as possible.
In China, the incidence of various oral diseases is increasing year by year. Statistics show that more than 90% of the Jiangsu people over 35 years old are suffering from calculus, gingival bleeding and periodontal disease. Oral bacterial infection not only directly affects cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases but will also increase the risk of digestive diseases, diabetes, etc.
Children are also suffering from oral diseases of various kinds. 47.4% of the three-year-olds in Jiangsu have dental caries. By the age of six, the rate of caries is as high as 71.4% with the number of caries averaging four per person.
Doctors have advised that children's oral health is closely related to growth and development. Parents should send their children to hospitals for examination and tooth-filling when they find that their children have deciduous teeth.
According to Shen Jiaping Chief Physician of the Department of Oral and Preventive Stomatology, Affiliated Stomatological Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, a broken deciduous tooth will definitely affect the health of the body. It will cause pain and affect chewing. If the child has a toothache, he will refuse to take food and the deciduous tooth might also affect the appearance and pronunciation.
At present, almost half of the population is suffering from dental cavities. The figure is even higher among children.
80 percent of urban children and 60 percent of rural children have dental cavities.
Results from a survey released last year show that 66 percent of Chinese children under five have dental cavities, and 97.1 percent of children suffering from cavities do not get them fixed.
