Jiangsu’s first ever official “Myopia Prevention and Control Manual for Primary School Students”, jointly prepared by education, health and other departments, was distributed Wednesday to 50,000 primary school students in the province.

According to the monitoring data, the detection rates of visual acuity among students in different sections of the province are: 48.5% for primary school students, 83.4% for junior high school students, and 90.7% for high school students.

The lower grades of primary school are also the visual acuity of students aged 6 to 9. The non-performing rate reached 37.2%, and the age was younger. The lack of outdoor activities, high frequency of use of electronic products, long homework, and poor eye environment has become the "culprits" of children's myopia.

]After the issuance of the handbook, Jiangsu will continue to prepare corresponding myopia prevention and control books for junior and senior high school students, introduce regular screening and standardization services for primary and secondary school students, and include myopia rate as a development evaluation indicator for junior high school.

In 2023, the overall myopia rate of young people will be reduced by more than 0.5 percentage points per year on the basis of 2018.
