The Yangtze River Delta is bracing for a railway transport peak during the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday, according to the transportations schedule released by the railway authority. 33.9 million railway trips are expected to be made during the two holidays, averaging 2.42 million a day and up 16.4% year on year. 74.5 set of passengers trains will be in service during the holidays to meet the rising demand. Major destinations include cities between Shanghai and Nanjing, Xuzhou, Hangzhou, Anqing, Wuhu, Ningbo and Taizhou. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a national holiday for the Chinese. The festival has long been a statutory day of public holiday in mainland China. The National Day holiday celebrated on October 1 is to mark the formation of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
Generally the National Day holiday is fixed at October 1–7 with adjacent weekend days being mandatory workdays to make up for lost time.
