Zhang Yufei, an athlete of Nanjing Sports Institute in Jiangsu Province, won two gold medals in swimming at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, Aug. 22.
Zhang placed first in the 200m butterfly final with a 2:06.61, the third fastest time in the event this year. Then in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay final of swimming, Zhang helped the Chinese team win the gold medal in 3:40.45.
Born in a swimming family in Xuzhou, Zhang trained with a professional team at five and made her way to Jiangsu Sports School at 12. The next year, she was included in the provincial swimming team and, at 15, advanced to the national team. Last year she won her first national championship and the gold medal in women's 200m butterfly in the 13th National Games. The 20-year-old swimmer has reached an international top level in the 200m butterfly, an event that Chinese athletes have strengths.
Shi Jinglin, also from Nanjing Sports Institute, was also a member of the relay team. The two Jiangsu players have brought the fifth gold medals for the institute at the Asian Games, after Qian Jiarui, Shen Duo and Sun Wei snatched gold in fencing, swimming and gymnastics respectively.
