The port city of Lianyungang in east China’s Jiangsu province has seized the opportunities brought about by the country’s Belt and Road Initiative for the promotion of China’s cooperation with Central Asian and EU countries along the new Silk Road.

A container ship from Yokohama, Japan, docked at the port of Lianyungang recently. After transshipment, the goods were transported directly to Hamburg, Germany via the New Eurasian Continental Bridge. This is the first time that Japanese goods have been transported to Europe via China. Compared with the traditional sea transportation, the price is more advantageous through sea-land combined transportation, and the time spent on traveling is shortened to 27 days from the previous 42 days.

In order to speed up the construction of a strategic fulcrum city for the Belt and Road Initiative, at the beginning of this year, Lianyungang unveiled a three-year action plan which will focus on the construction of an international hub port from port construction, transportation hub construction and industrial development that will become and integrated logistics port and an efficient trading port.

As the first physical platform for the development of the Belt and Road Initiative, the China-Kazakhstan Lianyungang Logistics Cooperation Base relies on the Asia-Europe cross-border freight trains to provide new measures for new routes, customs clearance and source of supply. The convenient and efficient customs clearance procedures and the low price have made Lianyungang's China-European trains the first choice for many multinational logistics groups. At present, the Sino-Kazakhstan logistics cooperation base has come up with a pattern of two-way transportation between the China-Central Asian trains and the China-European trains.
