Kaishan Island, a small island that only covers an area of 0.013 square kilometers, is called the outpost of the Yellow Sea.

Far from the coast, the island is a veritable island with no water or electricity for many years, making it difficult to resupply, but Wang Jicai and his wife insisted on guarding the island for 32 years.

On July 27 this year, Wang died of illness on his way to patrol the island. He was 58 years old. On August 6, General Secretary Xi Jinping praised Wang Jicai’s sacrifice, saying that he wrote an extraordinary chapter in his life with no regrets.

In 2011, Liu Lei, a journalist who went up to Kaishan Island, lived with Wang Jicai for three days there. He was deeply touched when he raised the flag and patrolled the island together with Wang Jicai. Recently, Liu Lei once again boarded Kaishan Island to tell us the couple’s 32 years of perseverance and no regrets.

On the Kaishan Island, Liu Lei found that the island has changed a lot. With water and electricity on the island, life is better on the island than before.

When Wang and his wife first came to the island, the troops sent him fresh water and supplies on a regular basis. But when he heard that it would take thousands of RMB to deliver each time, he refused to let the troops send supplies anymore. He collected raindrops and then simply purified them to drink.

Kaishan Island's natural conditions are not good. In order to be able to root on Kaishan Island, the couple decided to open up land on the island. Unexpectedly, in the first year, 100 poplars were planted but all died. In the second year, more than 50 sophora trees were planted, but none of them survived. Until the third year, one seedling of Melia Azedarach tree survived. Today, more than 30 trees are grown on the island after years’ efforts.

On the island, there is also an Exhibition Hall established by the local government, showing a number of items used by Wang Jicai before his death. A stack of old radios shows another side of Wang Jicai's life.

In the first two decades on the island, Wang received the external information mainly through listening to the radio. To him, the material condition is poor, but he can endure. But the most difficult part is to endure the loneliness and dreariness. The radio had almost become an ear he could not leave. Over the years, He has used 19 radios.

In 2012, Wang heard something on the radio that made him very angry, the Diaoyu Island incident. After hearing this, he carved a line on a tree, saying that "Diaoyu Island belongs to China", to alert himself.

He also carved the words “Congratulations to the success of Beijing's bid for Olympic Games”, "Wish Beijing hold 2008 Olympic successfully", and so on. In this way, he shared the achievements of his country through his small black box and radio waves in this deserted island.

Every item in the exhibition reflects Wang Jicai’s love to Kaishan island, to China. They also witness the 32 years of Wang’s adherence and sacrifice.
