In the process of promoting the development along the Yangtze River Economic Belt, east China’s Jiangsu province is constantly exploring ways of boosting high-quality development to enhance the sense of happiness for the local people.
The 410 households in a lakeside village of Shaobo Lake in Yangzhou used to rely on fishing to make a living. Long-term overfishing and purse seine farming depleted the fishery resources in the lake and deteriorated the ecological environment gradually.
The local authorities decided to restore the sceneries by returning the lake to fishery and building resettlement quarters for the fishermen.
Since the launch of returning the lake to fishery, the Shaobo Lake is abundant with more fish and shrimps while a larger number of wetland parks have been built around the lake shore.
Cashing in on the ecological improvement, the village authority started to promote rural tourism. Last year, the village earned more than 20 million yuan from its tourism industry, turning the formerly impoverished village into the most beautiful fishing village in the country.
The improvement of the ecological environment along the Yangtze River has helped to improve the sense of well-being for the people in Jiangsu.
In Wuxi, the construction of the Xingou River waterfront hub will effectively alleviate the flood control pressure of Taihu Lake and improve the quality of life of lake shore residents.
The resettlement quarter in Jiangxin Islet of Nanjing has been turned into a livable homeland for the residents who lost their previous homes to government’s requisition of land.
Authorities in Suzhou have cleaned up 69 black and smelly rivers and increased 281 kilometers of sewage pipelines to enhance people’s sense of gain in social security improvement.
At the same time, Jiangsu has sought active integration into the Yangtze River Delta, adding dividends to the people's livelihood development in the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
