East China’s Jiangsu province has further developed the advantages of water transport and accelerated the integration of port resources by taking a series of initiatives to boost the reform dividends and increase the efficiency of the port industries.
In the first half of this year, the Taizhou Port reported 115 million tons of throughputs, up 22.6% from a year ago and leading all the inland ports along the Yangtze.
The opening to traffic of the 12.5-meter deepwater channel has allowed more ocean-going vessels to sail into the inland ports.
The number of vessels calling at the inland ports along the Yangtze River increased by 20.2% year on year in the first half of this year. 4,607 vessels boast capacity of more than 500,000 tonnages.
The throughput of bulk cargo such as metal ore and oil and gas products has increased significantly. The throughput of metal ore was recorded at 220 million tons, up 12.9%. The throughput of oil and gas products reached 50 million tons, up 5.7% year on year.
At the same time, the province has promoted the integration of coastal ports along the Yangtze River, coordinated the layout, and organized the development of the clusters to see transformation from a single port system to the intensive port operation.
Nanjing, Zhenjiang and Yangzhou have seen smoother business cooperation and resource allocation between the port groups. Suzhou has accelerated the integration of ports and the extension of the port industry chain.
In the first half of the year, the province's above-scale ports completed a total cargo throughput of 1.13 billion tons. The foreign trade throughput was 250 million tons, up 3.2% year on year. The TEU throughput was 8.76 million units, an increase of 4.1% year on year.
In the next step, Jiangsu Port Group will also give full play to the advantageous role of the Yangtze River golden waterway, transform and upgrade a number of large-scale professional terminals that are compatible with the 12.5-meter deep-water channel, actively promote the construction of smart ports, and improve the automation level of port handling equipment.
The ports across the province will accelerate the transformation from transportation-oriented to port economy, further improve the integration of the coastal and inland ports, and seek greater integration into the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta boost the high quality development of the port industry in Jiangsu.
