Being a coastal province, Jiangsu regards its ports as crucial transportation hubs. In 2018, Jiangsu further takes the advantages of water transportation and speeds up the integration of port resources. After a series of reform, the economic returns of ports improved significantly.
The building of deep-water channels opened the new era for shipping industry in Yangtze River. The numbers of vessels coming in and out of the Province increased notably. In the first half of this year, the numbers of in-coming and out-going ships rose by 20.2 % year-on-year, with 4,607 50000-ton ships. The throughput of bulk goods also increases greatly, including metallic ores, natural gas and oil products.
Meanwhile, through integrating coastal ports, the single port system in Jiangsu is turning into an intensive operation system. In the first half of this year, total cargo throughput of provincial ports reached 1.13 billion tons, with a foreign trade throughput of 0.25 billion tons, which increased 3.2 % year-on-year, and a container throughput of 8.76 million TEU, which increased 4.1 % year-on-year. The growth rate of container and foreign through-puts in provincial ports is higher than that of the national ports.
In the future, provincial port group will fully take the advantage of Yangtze River Waterways. A batch of professional wharf will be upgraded to adapt the deep-water 12.5-meter channels. The construction of “Smart Port” and “Jiangsu Ports Online” projects will also be promoted, along with the improving of the automation level of the port machinery.
