On Aug.6th, Wang Shihua, widow of WangJicai, the director of thewatchhouse on Kaishan Island, came to People’s Armed Forces Department of Guanyun County to apply officially to take over the position of Wang Jicai and continue guarding the island.
According to Wang Shihua, they used to renew the national flag on holidays like July 1st and Aug 1st. However, Wang Jicai passed away before this year’s Aug 1st, leaving the national flag unchanged. The flag-raisingceremony is every morning’s routine for the two. Life is hard and lonely on the island, but they stayed, for 32 years.
When asked why do they choose to continue guarding this remote island with poor health condition, she replied that “Wang used to say, he will guard the island as long as he can. Now he fulfilled his commitment. His promise is my promise, so I will keep guarding this island as he did.”
At first, both Wang Shihua’s son and daughter were against her. But she said: “Don’t you remember what your father taught you? No country, no home. Even though Kaishan Island is small, it’s still our territory and needs to be guarded.” According to Wang Shihua, she has stayed in the island for 32 years and has an attachment with it. Wang Jicai was dispatched to the island, and now she will apply officially to stay. “I will stay and continue guarding Kaishan Island”, she said.
