97.1% of the major farm produce in China were up to the quality standards in the first half of this year according to a routine monitoring, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said in the National Agricultural Product Quality and Safety Risk Monitoring Report released on Thursday.

In the first half of the year, China has monitored nearly 20,000 samples of 92 varieties in 153 large and medium-sized cities, and detected 122 indicators, mainly focusing on risk assessment of 15 major farm produce such as grain and oil, vegetables, fruits, livestock and poultry and aquatic products. The qualification rate reached 97.1% in total.

2.9% were rated unqualified, mainly due to excessive pesticide residues in cowpea, amaranth and celery in some producing areas, said Guang Defu, director of the Bureau of Quality and Safety Supervision for Agro-products of the Ministry of Agriculture. Some livestock and poultry products and aquatic products were found to have excessive residues of veterinary antibiotics, he said.

The ministry has laid out comprehensive safety standards including more than 6,000 quality standards in pesticide and veterinary residue and more than 5,000 other industry standards. Green and organic food standards have been applied in a greater scope, he told a press briefing on farm produce safety.

A national safety monitoring network has been established with 117,000 superintendents on duty, and they have intensified the crackdown on illegal use of ractopamine and other restricted pesticides.
