The first shipment of liquefied natural gas supplied to China by the Yamal LNG Project of Russia in the Sino-Russian energy cooperation project arrived at the Nantong Rudong LNG receiving station on Thursday after a 19-day voyage. Rudong has thus become the first stop of the project in China.

The transportation of the first shipload of LNG was undertaken by SS Russanov. As soon as it arrived in Nantong, the LNG in the four gas storage tanks on the ship were transported to nearby gas storage tanks.

The liquid natural gas will be heated and gasified in Yangkou Port before being sent to the main network of the West-East Gas Pipeline and thousands of households.

Russia has chosen Rudong as the first receiving station of the LNG project for the important role played by Jiangsu in the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

Yamal LNG is an integrated project encompassing natural gas production, liquefaction and shipping. The Project consists of construction of an LNG plant with an output capacity of around 16.5 million tons per year, using the South Tambey Field as a resource base. The field’s proven and probable reserves, by PRMS standards, are estimated at 926 billion cubic meters. Extensive transportation infrastructure is being built in the scope of the Project, including a sea port and the Sabetta Airport.

Located in the Arctic Circle in Russia, the Yamal project is the first large-scale energy cooperation project launched in Russia by China after the Belt and Road initiative was proposed. It is also the largest investment project launched in Russia by China. It can produce 16.5 million tons of LNG each year to become an important fulcrum of the Ice Silk Road. One quarter of the LNG produced there will be shipped to China.
