The exhibition of Painter Xing Jianjian’s oil paintings entitled “Fire·Lotus Flower” opened Sunday afternoon in Litchi Art Gallery of Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation (JSBC). The exhibition was organized by Haipai Media of JSBC and Quanmei Culture Group and hosted by Litchi Cultural & Creative, Litchi Art Gallery and Shengde Culture.

The exhibition mainly displays 48 outstanding flower and Buddha paintings by Mr. Xing Jianjian. The works are strongly characterized by Xing’s style – obscure and dim.

The second to the left is the painter Xing Jianjian.

Why did Xing choose to combine flowers with Buddha? Mr. Xing believes that the Buddha and the flowers are beautiful representations. It can be described as a duet of beauty if the two are combined. Meanwhile, the Buddha also represents “kindness”. The combination of the two also symbolizes Xing’s intention of spreading “kindness” and “beauty”.

Oil painting has hundreds of years of history in the West. A variety of artistic style has been created so far. Ding Yalei, an art critic, argues that in such a context, it is not easy for an artist to develop a personal identity, while Mr. Xing's work is highly recognizable. His works, including the flower and Buddha collections this time and other collections of his, feature a relatively stable and unified style. The work can still be identified even if placed with works by other artists.

In addition to identification, subjects, contents, compositions, colors and other aspects of the appreciation of art should also be considered. The audience could feel Xing’s natural and relaxed state when he created the works.

Ding used the expression “In Fire that a Lotus Flower was Born” from Vimalakīrtinirdeśa to describe the exhibition. It is almost impossible that a lotus flower is born or exists in fire.

The fire represents mundane life and the lotus flower represents Zen. The story in Buddhism means that even in mundane life, Zen still exists, said Ding.
