Customs issues notice on spring festival travel

   As the Spring Festival holiday approaches, the Customs reminds passengers that when they leave the country, they cannot carry more than 20,000 yuan in cash or foreign currency equivalent to 5,000 U.S. dollars. When returning home at the end of the overseas journey, a customs duty will be levied on the total value of the carried articles exceeding 5,000 Yuan. Items sent from or to Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan by Chinese nationals are capped at 800 yuan for each. Items sent from or to foreign countries by Chinese nationals are capped at 1000 yuan for each. The Customs also reminded Chinese nationals not to buy endangered animals and plants and their products, such as incense, tortoiseshell jewelry, ivory and other crafts when they travel abroad. The Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year, falls on Feb. 16 this year.
