Over 300 hectares of crops across the province were affected by the freezing temperature caused by the recent rain and snow recently, according to a report released by the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Civil Affairs on Monday.
Zhu Yongmin of Zhonghua Village, San Mao Street, Yangzhong City, was burning with anxiety as the wheat in the fields he contracted was barely budding due to the delayed sowing and impact of the recent extreme weather.
Early in the morning, the agricultural specialists arrived at the fields to check the growth of the wheat.
Zhu dug a ditch furrow under the guidance of the technicians in order to prevent waterlogging that can be a frequent natural calamity for crop growth.
The technicians remind the farmers the most important thing to do at this time is to do a good job of wheat field management.
The continued low temperature from the freezing weather wrecked havoc on the growth of greenhouse crops and flower. Authorities in Donghai County organized vegetable farmers to add warmth-keeping facilities to the greenhouses in order to prevent the frostbite of vegetables, flowers and other crops.
The freezing temperature also caused a headache for the fishermen in Gaoyou County where the Shaobo Lake and Gaoyou Lake were frozen, giving rise to floating icebergs from the water current which cut the fishing net and made it possible for the fish to get away from the enclosure.
Local authorities have advised the fishermen to break the ice as soon as possible in a bid to minimize their losses.
