A heavy snowstorm hit most parts of the province on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday. This is the second snowfall in the New Year.
As of two Thursday afternoon, snow pileups were reported in 53 counties, county level cities or districts with 15.1 centimeters of snowfall reported in Gaochun, which is the heaviest of all in the province.
The center of the snowstorm includes Nanjing, Huai’an, Zhenjiang, Changzhou and the areas along the Huaihe River and Yangtze River.
Speed control has been imposed on the highways affected by the snowfall. The maximum speed on Beijing-Shanghai expressway, Shenyang-Hainan expressway and Changzhou-Taizhou expressway are capped at 40 kilometers per hour.
The snowfall brought about suspension of ferry services at Banqiao of Nanjing， Dagang of Zhenjiang and Yangzhong and cancellations of coach services for most cities across the province.
260 trains had been cancelled across the snow-hit areas. The cancellations affected 100 trains traveling past Nanjing.
Nanjing Lukou International airport announced cancellations of 135 flights on Thursday.
Urban management, sanitation, transportation and other departments have made swift responses to the traffic chaos caused by the snowfall by sending workers to shovel snow and ensure the smoothness of the major streets in the urban areas. Traffic police officers kept to their duties through 24-hour patrol to ensure traffic safety.
