Jiangsu is experiencing a shortage of blood supply this winter. The provincial blood bank said it is witnessing a drop in blood donors due to the lack of blood donation camps in the cold weather.

The provincial blood bank said it collected 30.78 tons of blood for clinical use last year through 94,000 donations, basically satisfying the demand for clinical blood use.

The plummeting temperatures, however, have deterred donors, as is evidenced by the empty blood collection van on Gulou Square of Nanjing Wednesday morning.

The eight blood collection outlets saw 11 donors contributing their blood in the morning.

No more than 140 donors contributed their blood on Tuesday.

The provincial blood bank said it has an inventory of no more than 1.3 tons of blood with blood type A, B and O running short of supply.

With the spring Festival approaching, the gap between the supply and demand of clinical blood will be further increased, the blood bank said.

Doctors say appropriate blood donation can increase their own hematopoietic function, promote blood circulation, prevent hypertension, cerebral thrombosis and blood donation in winter does not affect human body functions.
