A heavy snowfall, the heaviest in five years, has been sweeping the northern and central parts of the province on Thursday, paralyzing traffic and stranding passengers amid a pre-holiday travel peak. Many people have volunteered to clean up the snow amid the heavy snowfall.

CPC members in Maogaoqiao sub-district of Nanjing have volunteered to clean up the snow on the streets. 72-year-old Shi Keming is one of the volunteers.

Zhao Zhengli, a street cleaner, has kept working on shifts since nine Wednesday evening to sweep the snow on the streets. Though working for more than ten hours, Zhao and his workmates felt relieved when they saw the urban roads and streets were unaffected in the snowfall.

Horticulture workers in Taizhou city got up early in the morning to beat the snow off the tree branches with bamboo poles.

Sun Guangyu, a railway worker, was seen inspecting the rail tracks at three Thursday morning to ensure that the turnout linkage device worked properly.

Sun is in good company. More than 100 railway workers in Xuzhou stayed out all night in the outdoor by working more than 6 hours with hundreds of sweeps to ensure the safe operation of the trains.

A total of 18000 traffic police officers and 20000 auxiliary traffic officers fought against the snowfall to ensure the safety of the road traffic.

At the intersection of Mochou West Road in Nanjing, a cable fell to the ground due to the unbearable pressure from the snow. At the critical moment, an officer on duty rushed forward to hold up the cable with the right hand and signaled to the driver of a passing bus to drive through. The officer held up the cable hundreds of times during the 2.5-hour period.
