As the National Memorial Day commemorating the victims of the Nanjing Massacre is approaching, an exhibition titled Günther, His Son and Their Half-Century Story with China was held at the cultural and art center in Qixia District of Nanjing city on Dec 10. (Photo from vijs.net)

When the Japanese troops launched the Nanjing Massacre in 1937, Karl Günther set up a refugee camp at the Jiangnan Cement Plant, which is in today's Qixia District of Nanjing, and helped save more than 20,000 refugees. He also translated their letters for help into German and sent the letters to the German Foreign Ministry, providing strong evidence of Japanese war atrocities in Nanjing.

Karl Günther's niece, the 77-year-old Anitas Günther, came to the exhibition. She carefully read every paragraph and watched every photo at the exhibition, along with Xu Erxin, 86-year-old daughter of Xu Shennong, the then financial director of the Jiangnan Cement Plant.

Ms. Günther felt proud of what her uncle did in China and hoped the friendship between China and Germany would last forever.
