Jiangsu steps up innovation-powered development

  East Chinas Jiangsu province has made unremitting efforts to step up innovation-powered development by transforming its pool of scientific and educational talents into innovation-powered development advantages for new breakthroughs in the social and economic development.

  Sun Zhijiang, an expert funded by the countrys National Recruitment Program of Global Experts or One Thousand Talents Program, visited his workshop shortly after he was got back to Rugao from a business trip.

  Suns firm in the new and hi-tech development zone in Rugao city has developed an upgraded version of the LED chip module that has better luminous efficiency. The upcoming mass production of the chi module will become a new growth engine for the company to fuel its innovation-powered development.

  Sun graduated from Texas State University with a doctoral degree. He used to work with Intel and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation before returning to China for the research and development of upstream LED products by launching a startup firm in Rugao.

  He was offered 7000 square meters of standard workshops and more than 20 sets of furnished apartments.

  Hai Dike Optoelectronic, the firm Sun founded five years ago, has grown into Chinas first and the worlds third largest manufacturer of LED chip testing equipment.

  His third generation semiconductor industry research institute has become the growth engine for the LED industry in Nantong.

  In Zhoushan village of Suzhou, Zhou Jianming, an inheritor of provincial level intangible cultural heritage, has been giving lectures to the local craftsmen every week.

  The village authority has joined hands with fine arts colleges to open lectures so as to train the local craftsmen and encourage them to participate in exhibitions at home and abroad.

  The village has also set up a CPC branch for the walnut carving craftsmen and launched an e-commerce platform for the local retailers to sell their walnut carving products both online and offline.

  The village now registers more than 3000 walnut carving technicians who turn out over 300 million yuan of sales volume each year.

  Jiangsu is now backed up with 10.76 million talents of various kinds with 79000 rated as high-end talents.

  More than 20000 enterprises have joined hands with universities and research institutes to launch 6572 innovation-oriented platforms to help with the commercialization of over 4000 research breakthroughs.

  A slew of talent-friendly and technologically favorable policies have given rise to an eco-friendly talent system and promoted the integration of the talent growth and industrial development.
