Over a dozen of the world's leading internet scientific and technological achievements were showcased at the height of the ongoing 4th World Internet Conference or WIC for short on Dec. 3 in Wuzhen, China's eastern Zhejiang Province.
During the release, world-renowned internet giants including Huawei, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Apple, DidiChuxing, as well as leading research institutions introduced their state-of-the-art products and technologies which the event's recommendation committee deemed to be the 18 latest breakthroughs in the internet sector, 14 of which were released independently during the ceremony.
Among the lineup, China's homegrown telecom giants Huawei presented its 3GPP 5G pre-commercial system, Microsoft introduced Xiaoice, its emotion computing-based AI, China Satellite Navigation Office uncovered its BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, and DidiChuxing made public its new generation big data based platform for mobile journeys.
The achievements were selected from over 900 candidates around the world by the recommendation committee of the 4th WIC, which consists of over 40 prestigious experts.
The items on the achievements list reflect the general trend in internet development, said Sun Ninghui, who sits on the recommendation committee and is the director of the Institute of Computing Technology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences or CAS.
From the list, we can see that information infrastructure is still the foundation of the sector, artificial intelligence has become the driving force of internet development, and products or technologies that are related to people's daily lives, as witnessed in the release from EV giant Tesla, car-hailing company DidiChuxing and bike-sharing firm Mobike, are still dominating the research and development in the sector.
Some of the achievements listed this year are yet to be applied in industry, said Wu Hequan, Chinese co-chair of the recommendation committee and host of the release ceremony.
The release is intended to demonstrate the innovative competence of the internet sector and showcase the advances that internet insiders have made in scientific and technological development, he said.
The list of the 14 independently released achievements during the ceremony include Huawei 3GPP 5G Pre-Commercial System, Arm Security Architecture, Microsoft Xiaoice – Emotion Computing Based Artificial Intelligence, BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, Qualcomm's world's first announced 5G data connection on a 5G modern chipset for mobile devices, major application results based on Sunway TaihuLight Supercomputing System, the first photonic quantum computer beating early classical computers, Tesla Integrated Energy Solutions, DidiChuxing's big data based new generation of mobile journey platform, Mobikedockless smart bikeshare, Alibaba's ET Brain, Baidu's DuerOS, Amazon's AWS GreenGrass, and Apple's AR Kit.
Chinese President Xi Jinping wrote a congratulatory letter to the Fourth World Internet Conference, saying that reform of global cyberspace governance has entered a crucial phase and building a community of common future in cyberspace has become a consensus across the world.
The ongoing technological and industrial revolution featured by information technology has injected strong impetus into the economic and social development, Xi said, adding that the development of the Internet has also brought new challenges to sovereignty, security and development interests of nations worldwide.
He called on the international community to respect cyber sovereignty and make concerted efforts to promote development, safeguard security and improve governance in cyberspace and share its benefits.
