Science and technology has played an increasingly important role in the promotion of the quality and efficiency of the modern agricultural sector in Jiangsu.

Zhou Jun, head of an agricultural enterprise, said the most comfortable temperatures for red palm to grow is between 18 and 28 degrees Celsius with the humidity varying from 65% to 75%.

The temperatures inside the IoT-connected greenhouses are set at 25 degrees Celsius with humidity around 70%, he said.

A recycling fan will be set in motion once the humidiy inside the greenhouses goes beyond 80%.

The precise irrigation integrating water and fertilizer and the three-layer sunshade curtain at the top of the shed is also controlled by the IoT.

A 5000-square-metre shed requires only three or four workers to manage, reducing the number of employees by two-thirds compared with the traditional ways.

In Nantong Tiancheng Group's Modern chicken farm, the fully-enclosed intelligent production line realizes automatic temperature control, humidity control, feeding, cleaning excrement and egg picking.

Agricultural technologies have prospered in Jiangsu since the start of the 12th five-year plan period.

The province has awarded 683 new agricultural technologic titles, won 38 national prizes and 703 national patent authorizations.

19 paddy rice varieties have been rated super rice by the Ministry of Agriculture, accounting for one sixth of the national total. 60% of the province’s agricultural production has been digitalized. Scientific and technological achievements contributed 66.2% to the province’s agricultural growth last year, outshining other provinces and municipalities across the country.

In the meantime, Jiangsu has developed multi-efficient platform for the commercialization of agricultural technology achievements. The province has launched 17 national modern agricultural demonstration zones, 112 provincial modern agricultural zones with 65 agricultural parks at and above the provincial level, 47 modern agricultural comprehensive demonstration bases and 350 agricultural technology supermarkets.

Spurred by the agricultural technologies, the agricultural added value in jiangsu reached 4.32 trillion yuan last year, ranking third in the country. Its grain production has been stabilized at 35 million tons with the rice and vegetable yields continuing to rank foremost in the country.
