Many migrant birds are flying to warmer places in the south as the days are getting colder and colder. Just days ago, the migrant birds’ reservation around Hongze Lake in Huai’an city welcomed a flock of birds that is on the national list of protection – Cygnuses, or white swans.

Apart from swans, herons, kiwis, mallards are all here, giving Hongze Lake a sense of liveliness.

  Swan Lake

Hongze Lake is the largest natural reservoir of Huaihe River. The birds’ view of the lake presents a swan that is ready to fly. That’s why people call it “swan lake”.

Meanwhile, Hongze Lake is the only national wetland protection area in Jiangsu Province. It is also an important transfer station, sometimes destination for migrant birds in Northeast Asia. Over 450,000 birds of more than 200 types stop or stay here for winter.

However, because of population and human exploitation, no single swan could be seen in the first ten years of the 21st century.

It was until 2010 did the Hongze Lake re-embrace swans and certain numbers of swans could be seen around Hongze Lake since then. That is the best proof for Hongze Lake’s environmental protection achievements.
