East China’s Jiangsu province has launched 500 homes for people with disabilities over the past years in its campaign for the improvement of people’s livelihood.
Inside the Nanjing Gulou District Phoenix Home for the Disabled People, an intellectually handicapped boy is practicing writing the Chinese characters in the spacious and bright activity room with a personal painting album placed nearby. The other disabled people were learning to play the piano and read aloud the Chinese characters under the guidance of volunteers.
Families with disabled persons tend to be financially strapped and the auxiliary employment service has become an important way to help some disabled families get rid of poverty. The dining hall of a service center for disabled persons has hired two mentally handicapped persons to work as waiters.
As of the end of October, Jiangsu had registered the addition of 531 homes for people with disabilities, well ahead of this year’s goal.
More homes for people with disabilities will be set up at the township and sub-district levels in the future.
