An original opera The Diaries of John Rabe is scheduled to make debut at the Jiangsu Grand Theatre on December 13th, the very day that marks China’s fourth National Memorial Day for Nanjing Massacre victims.
The opera is planned by the provincial department of publicity and produced by the provincial cultural investment management company and the provincial performing arts group.
The performing troupe is now making the final rehearsal for the show that is based on The Good Man of Nanking: The Diaries of John Rabe, a crucial document for understanding one of World War II's most horrific incidents of genocide, one which the Japanese have steadfastly refused to acknowledge.
It is also the moving and awe-inspiring record of one man's conscience, courage, and generosity in the face of appalling human brutality.
John Rabe, manager of the Nanjing office of the Siemens China Company, was head of the Nanking Safety Zone, a demilitarized zone for Chinese civilians set up by some westerners on the eve of the Japanese occupation of Nanjing.
