Well-known Spanish interior designer Martin was recently invited to Nanjing for a five-day visit to explore the local mortise and tenon joint carpentry processes.

Mortise-And-Tenon joints are an extremely old construction technique that has stood the test of time and is still being used today. Examples of this ancient joint is found in Chinese furniture thousands of years old. It can produce joints that are extremely strong, and the technique can be scaled up or down in size with great success.

Martin will combine his unique design ideas with Nanjing’s traditional mortise and tenon joint processes to explore a new way of integrating hand-made culture into modern consumer lifestyles.

“As my father was a carpenter, timber made deep impression on me when I was a child,” Martin said. “Therefore, I have chosen the mortise and tenon joint process among numerous local intangible culture heritage skills in Nanjing.”

In the future, Martin plans to design a new artwork based on the mortise and tenon joint process.

“I hope the artwork can highlight its practical nature and also provide a new style and way of thinking for people studying the mortise and tenon joint process,” Martin said.
