With the development of Internet of Things technology, power interoperability is also becoming increasingly mature. Relying on the leading edge of IoT technology, east China’s Jiangsu province has built the world's first largest virtual power plant, laying a solid foundation for the sustainable growth of the smart grid.

Power generation and dynamic balance of electricity use is an important guarantee for the smooth operation of the power grid otherwise it will lead to power grid failure. The traditional solution is to urgently mobilize standby power generation resources while making power cuts.

The first set of the country’s source network smart grid system is able to control electricity use on the minor equipment through the installation of IoT terminals with large electricity consumers for precise control of a large number of decentralized and uncontrollable electrical equipment and avoid non-discretionary power failure.

With the involvement of IoT technology, the grid has become more sensitive and smarter to come up with a virtual power plant by concentrating the previously scattered electricity load to make it controllable and usable at any time.

This system was put into operation last May in Jiangsu to become the largest of its kind in the world.

In addition to coping with power failure and natural disasters, this system can also solve the instability and randomness of hydropower, wind power and other clean energies and relieve the worries for the large-scale development and utilization of clean energies.

By 2020, Jiangsu will enable the precision control on 10 million kilowatts of interruptible load, equivalent to the reduction of 10 million kilowatts of generating units and the emissions of 97,000 tons of sulfur dioxide and 35 million tons of carbon dioxide.
