Despite this year's very hot summer, a team of college students traveled almost across China to the desert in Minqin county, Wuwei city of West China’s Gansu province to assist residents with windbreak and sand fixation work.

These students are members of a voluntary team, Forestation Trip to Minqin, which was organized by students at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) in 2014, with the aim to recruit students from various colleges to do desert windbreak and sand fixation work.

Thanks to the NUAA students’ efforts, the team has grown from 15 members from NUAA in 2014 to 100 volunteers from 13 colleges this year. They have done desert greening transformation work covering an accumulated area of 18,400 hectares in the past four years.

Team members this year are from 13 colleges, including Nanjing University, Nanjing University of Science and Technology (NUST), Zhengzhou University and Ningbo University, who went to do desert greening work in Minqin county in two groups.

Shi Xin, a student majoring in aircraft design engineering at NUAA who has gone to Minqin twice, said that “Although participating in other social practices can allow me to have wider experiences, I still felt that it is more meaningful for me to contribute to the desert ecosystem’s improvement.”
