Students learn to make oil-paper umbrellas in Mudu Old Town where a summer festival is held every weekend.

Cultural activities are held in Mudu Old Town every weekend from July to August for people to learn traditional arts from renowned craftsmen and artisans in Suzhou and explore private gardens in the city.

The Mudu Summer Art Festival aims to promote Suzhou’s traditional art and handicraft, from pingtan, Suzhou-dialect ballad singing, to silk embroidery, and oil-paper umbrella making, among younger people.

Participants can also enjoy local delicacies, such as pork-filled moon cakes, tofu pudding, glutinous rice dumplings, and mung bean soup, at food stands in the old town.
