The Yangtze River Delta has promoted science and technology innovation alliance to boost the development momentum in the delta region since the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta was upgraded into a national strategy.

Ren Tianbin, a professor with Shanghai-based Tongji University, recently joined the Suzhou-based Yangtze River Delta Advanced Materials Research Institute where he will lead a team to carry out analysis, testing and research and development of polymer materials.

"Our research focuses on the development, industrialization, and application promotionof functional materials. The downstream companies in Suzhou are conducive to the R&D,transformation and industrial application of our functional materials."said RenTianbin, Professor with Shanghai-based Tongji University

Since its establishment in 2019, the Yangtze River Delta Advanced Materials Research Institute has united advantageous companies and leading professionals in the Yangtze River Delta to tackle bottleneck technologies in the field of materials science. The institute is jointly established by Jiangsu Province, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Iron and Steel Research Group, and Baowu Group.

"General Secretary Xi Jinping has emphasized that the Yangtze River Delta region must not only provide high-quality products, but also provide high-level technological supplies. In the past few years,we have implemented nearly 10 major strategic research projects, which has not only met the strategic needs of the country, but provided technical support for the materials industry in the Yangtze River Delta."Liu Qing, Dean of Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute

With the continuous launch of innovation carriers, such as the National Technology Innovation Center, Zijinshan Laboratory, Gusu Laboratory, and Taihu Laboratory, the Yangtze River Delta has become home to 1/5 of the country’s national laboratories and high-tech zones. High-end industrial clusters such as artificial intelligence, biomedicine, and integrated circuits have brought together 22% of the country's high-tech enterprises.

An enterprise from Wuhu City, Anhui Province, has carried out scientific and technological research and collaborative innovation at the Nanjing Advanced Laser Technology Research Institute to boost new momentum for industrial development by relying on the original technology of the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

"Through the coordination and cooperation between the Yangtze River Delta,we can ensure that our technology can serve the enterprises in the Yangtze River Delta, and at the same time collect market demand information to promote our scientific research."Zhou Jun, Executive Vice President of Nanjing Advanced Laser Technology Research Institute

In recent years, the four provincial regions in the Yangtze River Delta have given full play to their respective advantages and coordinated innovation efforts by taking targeted measures such as strengthening the top-level design, compiling a development plan for the construction of a technological innovation community, and jointly promoting the construction of the G60 Science and Technology Innovation Corridor and the Shanghai-Nanjing Industrial Innovation Belt.

Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui have strengthened collaborative research, focusing on integrated circuits, artificial intelligence, life and health and other fields to carry out basic research. In 2020, they worked together to get 186 major national scientific and technological projects with more than 2.8 billion yuan of funding support.

As of the end of 2020, the Yangtze River Delta Science and Technology Resource Sharing Service Platform had gathered 22 major scientific installations and 35546 scientific instruments with a total value of more than 43.1 billion yuan and a total of 1.2 million visits.

The "2020 Yangtze River Delta Regional Collaborative Innovation Index" report shows that the total collaborative innovation index of the Yangtze River Delta region has increased from a base score of 100 in 2011 to 204.16 in 2019, more than doubling the overall index.
