Lou Qinjian, secretary of the CPC Jiangsu provincial committee, demanded tougher measures in the treatment of pollution in the Taihu Lake. He made the remarks when going on an inspection tour in Wuxi city on Thursday.
Lou demanded efforts to learn and implement the Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization, uphold the new development concept, promote the scientific governance of the Taihu Lake, reduce the concentration of phosphorus and nitrogen to ensure the safety of drinking water and no outbreak of blue-green algae.
He called for coordinated efforts to promote water pollution control, water resources allocation, water ecological restoration and strengthen emergency preparedness for flood control as the rainy season has arrived.
Lou inspected the silt dredging in Meiliang Lake, one of the smaller lakes around the Taihu Lake, to learn about the process flow, technical specialties and engineering progress.
He pointed out that the ecological dredging of the Taihu Lake can help increase the depth of the lake water, promote the circulation of the water body, effectively reduce the internal pollution of the lake body, and control the eutrophication of water bodies such as nitrogen and phosphorus.
Since this year, the meteorological and hydrological conditions of Taihu Lake have been conducive to the growth of blue algae, which has brought challenges to the safety of Taihu Lake in the summer.
In Gonghu Bay, Lou Qinjian inspected the water quality and blue algae concentration, and inquired about the indicators of total phosphorus, ammonia nitrogen, algae density detected by the automatic monitoring system.
The CPC provincial chief learned about the water quality monitoring during his inspection on water intake of a water plant. He pointed out that the water supply safety of the Taihu Basin is a matter of great concern to the lives of the urban and rural residents in the surrounding areas and the high-quality development of the integration of the Yangtze River Delta, making it necessary to strengthen monitoring and investigation of hidden dangers and take effective measures to ensure early warning, early preparation, early prevention and early treatment.
When inspecting the blue-green algae separation center in Xinwu District, Lou Qinjian made inquiry into the technological transformation and process upgrades, pointing out that the treatment of blue-green algae is a practical problem facing the governance of the Taihu Lake.
Measures should be taken to make full use of modern scientific and technological means, strengthen scientific and technological research, explore and promote the utilization of blue-green algae resources, and work together to break through the bottleneck constraints of the Taihu Lake governance and ensure the continuous improvement of the Taihu Lake water quality and ecological improvement, said the CPC provincial chief.
Lou Qinjian also asked local government to take tough measures to continue to promote Taihu Lake governance, promote ecological dredging, improve water quality, increase water environment capacity, promote water grass growth, and reconstruct the Taihu Lake ecological balance system.
He urged a long-term overall plan to promote industrial transformation and upgrading, urban and rural life pollution control, ecological restoration so as to promote a new path of high-quality development with ecological priority and green development.
