Suzhou welcomes a new museum

Wuzhong District Museum (吴中博物馆, WDM) made its first appearance rencently. With its internal decoration and exhibition arrangement almost finished, the new museum will start trial operation on June 28 and is expected to officially open at the end of September.

Situated in the Tantai Lake Scenic Area (澹台湖) and to the southwest of Baodai Bridge (宝带桥), WDM covers an area of about 8,500 square meters, and its exhibition area measures around 4,000 square meters. It has three floors above the ground and one floor under the ground, and boasts a collection of over 6,800 sets of cultural relics.

In addition to such functions as cultural exhibition, cultural relic research, public service, social education, leisure and tourism, WDM is also equipped with storehouse, office and leisure service facilities.

The exhibition area is primarily on the first and second floors. Visitors can enter the venuefrom the floating bridge on the first floor and then visit the exhibition halls there. There is also a rest area in the north of the second floor where visitors may enjoy the fine scenery of the Tantai Lake.

Among others, WDM’s designers have attached importance to making the city’s temperament integrate into it, and applied the garden-building techniques peculiar to the Jiangnan area to its architectural design. 

WDM is planning to organize special opening exhibitions in cooperation with leading museums in Jiangsu Province and all over the country in the future.
