111 new undergraduate degree programs, such as Data Science and Big Data Technology and Robot Engineering, have been approved by the Ministry of Education for universities and colleges in Jiangsu.
Among the new undergraduate programs, Data Science and Big Data Technology is approved for China University of Mining and Technology, Nanjing University of Information Technology and Jiangsu Normal University. Nanjing University of Information and Technology has launched the first major data analysis technology laboratory in Jiangsu. It will start to enroll students majoring in this field of study with the number ranging from 40 to 80.
Nanjing-based Southeast University has become the first in Jiangsu to enroll students in robot engineering which was approved by the Ministry of Education as a new undergraduate degree program in 2016,
With the release of China's New Generation of Artificial Intelligence Development Plan, the robot engineering program has gradually become a hot cake. 10 colleges and universities in Jiangsu joined in the competition for offering this degree program.
In July last year, the State Council published the New-generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence in China for the next 13 years. The Plan aims to have China’s overall AI technology and application level reach the world advanced level by 2020; have certain AI technology and application level reach the world leading level by 2025; and have the overall level reach the world leading level by 2030 and become the main AI innovation center in the world.
In the meantime, 8 universities in Jiangsu got the go-ahead from the Ministry of Education to have 21 undergraduate degree programs cancelled, such as the digital media technology program with Nanjing University, the network engineering program with China University of Mining Technology and animal science and printing engineering degrees with Jiangnan University.
