Farmers in east China’s Jiangsu province have been kept busy harvesting farm produce ranging from fish to oranges. Let’s take a close look.
Early in the morning, in Zaohe Town located on the banks of Luoma Lake, farmers were casting the nets to fish mature catfish. In a short while, a full load of fish was loaded onto the truck. These catfish are all raised by using recycled water, which has greatly improved their meat quality.
Zaohe Town has a long history of fishing but the disorderly aquaculture industry has caused certain ecological damage to the local area in the past. Starting from 2021, Luoma Lake was closed and fishing was banned. The Hubin New District has promoted modern aquaculture to create a full chain fishery industry that includes seedling cultivation, ecological aquaculture, aquatic product processing and sales, and cold chain logistics.
In the meantime, the local government has strengthened cooperation with e-commerce platforms such as JD.com to promote its high-quality aquatic products nationwide.
“Driven by modern aquaculture technology, the average yield per mu of aquaculture bases in our district has reached 6000 yuan with the annual income exceeding 70000 yuan, truly achieving an increase in ecological and economic benefits,” said Wang Yao, Director of the Rural Work Bureau of Hubin New District, Suqian City.
In Jurong County, workers have kept busy picking oranges. A hybrid variety of orange is planted here, with a yield of around 1500 kilograms per mu. The picking period will continue until around February.
