East China’s Jiangsu province has made every effort to strengthen the construction of major scientific and technological innovation platforms in a bid to consolidate the foundation of scientific and technological innovation, and activate its strong engine of high-quality development.

The major technological innovation platform is an important support for breaking through the forefront of science and key core technologies, and also a solid foundation for driving regional innovation levels.

In the past, China needed to import silicon carbide power electronic devices. However, the National Third Generation Semiconductor Technology Innovation Center Nanjing Platform, established in 2022, has replaced silicon carbide power electronic chips in just one year by relying on the deep technological accumulation in the third generation semiconductor field where the 55th China Electronics Technology Corporation is located. Currently, the silicon carbide power electronic chip has been applied in batches to millions of new energy vehicles, ensuring the supply chain security of China's new energy vehicle enterprises.

“We are currently the first in China to achieve mass production of MOSFETs, and our overall shipment volume is currently the highest in China, ranking among the first tier in the international market while our technology is leading domestically,” said Li Shiyan, R&D Director of the National Third Generation Semiconductor Technology Innovation Center (Nanjing) Platform.

Spearheaded by the National Third Generation Semiconductor Technology Innovation Center, the National Biomedical and Integrated Circuit Design Automation National Technology Innovation Center has landed in Jiangsu, becoming an important source of breakthroughs in key core technologies and driving industrial chain transformation and upgrading.

“After two years of construction, our Innovation Center has solved many key core technologies that were previously stuck, and our product technology has also been widely applied in many fields, such as in car chargers for new energy vehicles, photovoltaics for new energy generation, and energy storage,” said Bai Song, Deputy Director of the Platform of the National Third Generation Semiconductor Technology Innovation Center (Nanjing).

As an important component of the regional scientific and technological innovation system, major innovation platforms serve as a strong magnetic field for high-end innovation resources. While breaking through key core technologies, they also play a leading role in future cutting-edge technologies.

Last month, Wuxi began construction on the world's first deep-sea green intelligent technology test ship, which is about 110 meters long with a displacement of about 7000 tons, and powered by full electric propulsion to ensure a range of up to 10 thousand nautical miles.

The experimental ship is also equipped with a helicopter platform and a lunar pool system that connects directly to the seabed, making it a truly mobile offshore laboratory.

“This technology test ship will provide us with new technologies and equipment for intelligent ships. Its sea trials, including the use of deep-sea test sites, play a very important role in promoting the transformation and upgrading of Jiangsu's shipbuilding industry,” said He Chunrong, Executive Director of the Taihu Lake Laboratory of Deep Sea Technology and Science.

Focusing on the major tasks of "leading the way in technological self-reliance and self-improvement" and "taking the lead in achieving new breakthroughs in technological innovation", Jiangsu is accelerating the construction of major technological innovation platforms. Suzhou Laboratory and Zijinshan Laboratory will continue to release high-energy innovative achievements. The major scientific facilities of future network testing facilities and efficient and low-carbon gas turbine testing facilities will strengthen the scientific infrastructure. The Zhongshan Laboratory for Biological Breeding and the Yunlong Lake Laboratory for Deep Earth Science and Engineering will accelerate their construction speed. The Jiangsu Provincial Laboratory Alliance has been officially established.

Jiangsu has so far established a major innovation platform system spearheaded by laboratories, backed by technology innovation centers, and supported by major scientific and technological infrastructure.
