East China’s Jiangsu province has made every effort to promote the ecological conservation of rivers and lakes.

Surrounded by mountains, with clear water bodies and beautiful natural scenery, the 58.2 square hectare Beishan Reservoir is one of the important water sources in Jurong County.

In recent years, the Jurong Water Conservancy Bureau has relied on the superior ecological conditions of the reservoir to create the Beishan Reservoir Water Conservancy Scenic Area, transforming the fish pond under the dam into a water conservancy cultural theme park, and constructing hydrophilic pavilions, landscape fountains, and plank roads.

“In October, we were awarded the honorary title of Standardized Management Engineering Unit by the Ministry of Water Resources as we have built the Beishan Reservoir into a model water conservancy project in Jiangsu Province with modern management, intelligent operation, streamlined operation, landscape gardening, and ecological breeding,” said Shang Jin, Director of Beishan Reservoir Management Institute in Jurong City.

Starting from 2019, Jurong began ecological restoration of the severely polluted Wanjia River by constructing rainwater and sewage diversion and water conservancy landscape greening projects, and inviting a professional team from Hehai University for tracking and guidance.

“We have introduced the ecological restoration technology of herbivorous water by constructing an ecosystem of water bodies, achieving self-purification of water bodies and improving water quality,” said Liu Xiao, a staff of Huayang Sub-district Construction Bureau.

Since the beginning of this year, Jurong has completed the restoration of 15 ecological rivers and lakes, as well as the construction of 12 parks under the river chief system.
