May 22 is the International Day for Biological Diversity. Recently. East China’s Jiangsu province has held themed publicity activities to mobilize all sectors of society to protect biodiversity.

The provincial event for the International Day for Biological Diversity was held in Lianyungang on Monday. Delegates from 7 provincial demonstration zones for ecological civilization construction, including Qidong City of Nantong and Funing County of Yancheng, were awarded during the event, and 7 biodiversity lovers and volunteers were presented with Key Protected Animals and Plants in Jiangsu Province. To further arouse public awareness of biodiversity conservation, various thematic activities were organized. Taizhou has launched a mini app called "Beautiful Taizhou". By scanning the code on a mobile phone, citizens can not only see the distribution of all known plants and animals in the city, but also upload and share the biological beauty at any time. Jurong city organized students and parents to come to Jurong Chishan Lake National Wetland Park to see exhibitions and draw the beautiful scenery.

“We should take good care of nature and protect the diversity of animals and plants around us,” said Zeng Yunting, a student.

“Everyone has the responsibility and obligation to protect biodiversity and should actively become a participant actor and supervisor in protecting biodiversity,” said Luo Xin, staff member of Jurong Ecological Environment Bureau.

In recent years, Jiangsu has taken multiple measures to enrich its biodiversity. In Luoma Lake, the provincial fishery administration and supervision department increased the release of aquatic organisms, including 20 million Chinese mitten crabs, silver carp and bighead carp, which effectively supplemented the population of fish and aquatic species in the natural waters of the lake. Tiaozini Wetland in Dongtai of Yancheng has strengthened the protection of migratory birds’ habitat, and the species and population of migratory birds have reached new highs. The population of milu in Dafeng Milu National Nature Reserves has exceeded 7,000, making it the largest milu population reserve in the world.

Jiangsu is located in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the Huai River, close to the sea and possessed of numerous lakes. According to the biodiversity survey, 6,903 species have been recorded, 31 national demonstration zones for ecological progress have been built, and 8 practice and innovation bases for "lucid waters and lush mountains are gold and silver mountains" have been established, ranking among the highest in China.
