More than 50 children with congenital heart disease from northwest China's Qinghai Province received free surgical treatment in Nanjing. Lets' take a close look.

Starting on Wednesday, 52 children with congenital heart disease from Qinghai will undergo surgical treatment at the Cardiovascular Center of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University. After making detailed examination and evaluation, doctors conducted six minimally-invasive interventional procedures on Wednesday.

"I feel relieved. I saw my child's mental state is quite good. It has been an hour since she was anesthetized and was pushed out of the operating room after completing the surgery," said a parent of a child with Congenital Heart Disease.

"The six children we operated on today are all patients with atrial septal defects. Another child has a patent ductus arteriosus. The minimally-invasive occlusion method has minimal trauma with relatively small damage to children and rapid recovery. It can achieve the same effect as surgery. It is now a mainstream surgical method, and they can be discharged within 3 to 5 days," said Shao Jun, Chief Physician of Cardiovascular Surgery, Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University.

The hospital has implemented a "one-on-one" plan for 52 children with congenital heart disease. It is expected that within one month, all children with congenital heart disease will undergo surgery.

"Nearly half of patients can undergo interventional surgery, such as patients with simple congenital heart disease. However, some patients, such as those with ventricular septal defect and atrial septal defect, may require surgery due to various reasons, such as the defect being too large or the child being too young, or the location of the lesion being special, making them unable to undergo occlusion surgery. We will conduct remote consultation with experts from Beijing Fuwai Hospital to determine the surgical plan, which may last for about a month," said Shao Jun, Chief Physician of Cardiovascular Surgery, Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University.
