For the first time, a pregnant finless porpoise was photographed in the Nantong section of the Yangtze River. Let’s take a close look.
Four or five finless porpoises were playing and foraging in the waters of Binjiang Park in Nantong.
After making a careful observation, the staff of Nantong Environmental Monitoring Center judged that the finless porpoise might be pregnant.
“We consulted experts after photographers took videos of a finless porpoise with a bulging belly. Most probably it is a pregnant finless porpoise. The finless porpoise is at the peak of delivery from May to July every year and the congestion generally lasts about 12 months to culminate with one baby per birth." Xin Yu, Engineer of Jiangsu Nantong Environmental Monitoring Center said.
The finless porpoise is the only freshwater whale living in the Yangtze River. According to the results of the 2022 Yangtze River finless porpoise scientific survey published by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs on February 28, the current population of the Yangtze River finless porpoise stood at 1249, showing a historical recovery. In the past week, the gradual rise in temperature has made the finless porpoise very active, and the frequency and number of finless porpoises have increased significantly.
