The 3rd Yangtze River Delta Ancient Town Development Conference and a conference on promoting the application of ancient towns in Jiangnan for UNESCO World Heritage opened in Lili Ancient Town, Suzhou recently.

Ancient towns in Jiangnan, regions south of the Yangtze River, were first included on the tentative list of China's World Heritage in 2006. There are 11 such towns in Suzhou, Wuxi, Jiaxing and Shanghai's Pudong New Area, namely Zhouzhuang, Luzhi, Tongli, Shaxi, Jinxi, Zhenze, Lili, Huishan, Wuzhen, Xitang, and Xinchang.

As the leading city of the application, Suzhou has advanced legislation to protect ancient towns, and promoted them through international organizations such as Organization of World Heritage Cities and at major exhibitions and festivals including Grand Canal Culture and Tourism Expo, Suzhou Creative & Design Cultural Industry Expo, and Suzhou International Tourism Festival.
