Construction on three tunnels in Suzhou—East Taihu Lake Tunnel, Suzhou Bay Tunnel, and Yangcheng Lake Xingji Tunnel—started on December 19, involving an estimated total investment of 24.2 billion yuan.
East Taihu Lake Tunnel
With a total investment of around 8.8 billion yuan, the 8.8-kilometer tunnel will start from Wangshan Road in Wuzhong District in the north, pass through East Taihu Lake to reach East Taihu Avenue in Wujiang District, and connect Wuzhong and Wujiang areas of Taihu New Town. The construction will take about 48 months.
Suzhou Bay Tunnel
Starting from the intersection of Dongshan Avenue in Wuzhong District and No. 606 Provincial Highway, Suzhou Bay Tunnel will run beneath Binhu Avenue, East Taihu Lake, and Suzhouwan Avenue in Wujiang District and reach Wujiang Avenue. With a total length of 10.8 km and an investment of some 11.215 billion yuan, the project will be completed in 54 months.
Yangcheng Lake Xingji Tunnel
The main line of the 6.97-km-long Yangcheng Lake Xingji Tunnel will start from Yexiang Road in Xiangcheng District, pass through Jixue Road and Yangcheng Lake, and stretch southward to Yangcheng Lake Avenue to connect with the north extension to Xinggang Street. The branch line will start from Xiangcheng Avenue, pass through Yangchenghu East Road and be linked to the main line in the south. With a total investment of 4.22 billion yuan, the tunnel is expected to be open to traffic at the end of 2026.
